August 05, (THEWILL) – The history-making Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, will take on reigning Olympic champions, the USA in the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday.
Nigeria advanced to this stage by becoming the first African nation to reach the last eight in Olympic basketball, for both men’s and women’s competitions. Nigeria earned their spot with a 79-70 victory over fifth-ranked Canada on Sunday.
The USA, aiming for their eighth consecutive title, defeated Germany 87-68, with Jackie Young scoring 19 points and A’ja Wilson contributing 14 points.
Other quarter-final matches include France versus Germany, Spain against Belgium, and Serbia taking on Australia. France, the bronze medallists from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will look to capitalise on their home advantage.
The knockout stages of both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be held in Paris, following the group stages which took place near Lille in northern France.
The draw for the quarter-finals took place on Sunday, setting the stage for exciting matches as teams compete for a spot in the semi-finals and a chance at Olympic glory.
