January 19, (THEWILL) – Former Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson, has officially signed for Dutch giants Ajax on a two-and-a-half-year contract, the Eredivisie side announced on Thursday. The 33-year-old midfielder terminated his deal with Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq by mutual consent after just a few months.

Henderson will wear the number six shirt at Ajax, made famous in the 1990s by legendary Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf. Ajax manager John van’t Schip expressed his delight at capturing the experienced Englishman, stating: “We wanted an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities who could step in immediately. Jordan Henderson is that type of player.”

The move brings to an end Henderson’s short spell in Saudi Arabia, which attracted criticism from some who accused him of prioritising money over human rights concerns in the Gulf state. Homosexuality remains a criminal offence in Saudi Arabia, despite Henderson previously voicing support for LGBTQ+ rights.

Both parties described the termination of his Al Ettifaq contract as an “amicable” decision made for the “overall good of the club and for Jordan.” Henderson himself thanked the club and fans for the opportunity, while Al Ettifaq President, Samer Al Misehal, emphasised their respect for players in facilitating Henderson’s quick exit.

The former Liverpool stalwart, who won the UEFA Champions League and English Premier League with the Reds, will now ply his trade with the Dutch champions. Ajax boss Van’t Schip stated: “His arrival means a huge enhancement for our squad. Both on and off the pitch, a football player of this calibre is important for our many young players.”
