December 02, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich’s home Bundesliga match against Union Berlin, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, has been postponed due to heavy overnight snowfall in Munich and the resulting transport chaos across Bavaria.
The amount of snow, which is forecasted to continue falling until Saturday evening, has led to widespread cancellations of flights, trains and buses in and out of the city. Even if the pitch at Allianz Arena could be cleared, fans would not have safe transport options to reach the stadium. In addition, the Munich police strongly advised people to avoid leaving their homes given the dangerous road conditions.
Bayern Munich announced the postponement in a statement, saying, “The safety of our fans and the supporters of Union Berlin has absolute priority.” Officials determined the weather risks, including snow falling from the stadium roof, prevented holding the match safely. Access issues and a lack of sufficient security personnel further necessitated calling off the game.
There is no new rescheduled date yet for the match. Bayern Munich currently sits second in the Bundesliga table, while Union Berlin is in last place. The postponement allows both teams a brief respite before their next matches – Bayern versus Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin against Borussia Moenchengladbach.
The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) will announce the new date once determined. Tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled clash. This is the first Bundesliga match postponed this season due to weather.
