August 24, (THEWILL) – Christian Power Obi, Coach of Heartland FC, died on Friday following a road accident in Ebonyi State. The incident occurred as the team was travelling to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament.
The Heartland FC team departed from Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri at approximately 3:30 p.m. in three vehicles. Around 4 p.m., one of the vehicles collided with a parked truck while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Obi, who was unconscious with a minor injury to his right leg, was evacuated from the damaged bus along with other injured players.
Despite being rushed to a hospital in Okwelle, Imo State, the Coach did not survive. The club stated that his death has deeply affected everyone associated with Heartland. Under Obi’s leadership, the team had an unbeaten run in the Nigeria National League during the 2022/2023 season, culminating in winning the NNL Super 8 in Asaba, Delta State.
Heartland have requested privacy for the club and Obi’s family during this difficult time. The club announced it will not issue further statements for the time being. Obi’s remains have been taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital morgue in Owerri, while injured team members are receiving treatment at the same facility.
The club appreciates the public’s concern regarding the unfortunate event. Heartland’s unbeaten league performance and subsequent title win under Obi’s guidance will be remembered as part of his legacy at the club.
