July 06, (THEWILL) – With a commanding victory against Amanda Anisimova, Simona Halep advanced directly to the Wimbledon semi-finals on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old Anisimova was broken twice in each set by the 2019 champion as Halep won 6-2 6-4 on Centre Court in just over an hour and she will compete against Elena Rybakina in the semifinals while under the tutelage of Patrick Mouratoglou, a former coach of Serena Williams.
The 2020 championships were postponed due to COVID-19 and Halep, the 2019 champion, was unable to defend her title last year due to an injury. In recent weeks, the Romanian has appeared to be performing at or near her peak on grass again. The training she has received from Mouratoglou is reaping benefits.
In her first Grand Slam semifinal since the 2020 Australian Open, two-time major champion Halep will be in contention for another Grand Slam title. Tatjana Maria and Ons Jabeur will face each other in the other semifinal, as Halep waits to know who she will face.
