Haaland Leads Manchester City Treble Winners, Saka, Others On PFA Shortlist

August 17, (THEWILL) – Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones, key players in Manchester City’s treble-winning season, are among the nominees for the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year award.

The 23-year-old Haaland has made a sensational start to his career in English football after joining City from Borussia Dortmund, scoring 52 goals across all competitions. Teammates De Bruyne, City’s creative Belgian midfielder, and England defender, Stones, who was switched into a midfield role by manager, Pep Guardiola, last season, complete the City trio on the six-man shortlist.

Arsenal, who pushed City closest in the title race, also have two nominees – England winger Bukayo Saka, who enjoyed his best season yet, and club captain, Martin Odegaard. The only nominee outside the Premier League’s top two is Tottenham striker, Harry Kane, who has since joined Bayern Munich. The England captain was the second highest scorer in the league last season behind Haaland, hitting 30 goals.

The winner will be announced on September 8, with Haaland expected to be among the frontrunners after his incredible debut campaign which saw him break numerous scoring records. The prize is voted for by fellow professional players and so will represent high praise from Haaland’s peers, if he gets it.
