September 15, (THEWILL) – Former US President Donald Trump’s campaign reported Sunday that there had been “gunshots in his vicinity”.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” his Communications Director, Steven Cheung, said in a statement.

According to CNN, the former President was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club at the time of the incident. The course was immediately locked down

Writing on X, the Secret Service said the incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m., adding that it is working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate it.

THEWILL reports that the incident comes nearly two months after the former president was wounded in the ear when a gunman opened fire during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

Speaking in a fundraising email, Trump said he is “safe and well”.

“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me,” the email said.

Meanwhile, a suspect, who authorities believe is connected to the incident, has been taken into custody, a Facebook post from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said.

The sheriff’s office “has stopped a vehicle and taken a suspect into custody. A section of Interstate 95 near State Route 714 in Martin County is shut down. We will update this information as it becomes available”, the post read.

Reacting to the incident, the FBI said it “is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination” of former President Donald Trump.
