SAN FRANCISCO, January 26, (THEWILL) – Gunmen, who are suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect have attacked a police station in Dengi, Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Residents feared the gunmen were Boko Haram insurgents considering the way and manner the attack was carried out.
“It was as if they were looking for arms to operate elsewhere an they went away with so many guns from the police station,” a resident said.
But police spokesma Terna Tyopev, who confirmed the attack, said they were not sure the attackers were insurgents.
“The gunmen attacked the divisional headquarters in Dengi about 2am on Monday and stole seven AK-47 riffles after they overpowered our men on duty. One policeman, Zumban Donatus, was killed in the attack,” he said.
“We are not sure they are Boko Haram insurgents as we can’t pre-empt ongoing investigation. We can only confirm who they are after investigations.
“The gunmen also freed seven suspects but we have re-arrested five of them while a manhunt for others is on. We have also recovered one of the stolen riffles.”
