June 22, (THEWILL) – The Czech Republic staged a comeback to earn a 1-1 draw against Georgia in their Euro 2024 Group F match at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. The result keeps both teams’ hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive, whilst adding intrigue to the group’s dynamics.
Georgia took the lead through Georges Mikautadze’s penalty in the first half, following a handball by Czech defender Robin Hranac. The Georgians, appearing in their first-ever European Championship, displayed impressive attacking intent throughout the match, with Zuriko Davitashvili particularly threatening.
The Czech Republic equalised early in the second half when Patrik Schick bundled the ball over the line after Ondrej Lingr’s header struck the post. Schick’s goal, his sixth in European Championship finals, established him as the Czech Republic’s all-time top scorer in the competition. However, the striker’s joy was short-lived as he was forced off with an injury later in the match.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game in the closing stages. Czech substitute Mojmir Chytil narrowly missed with a glancing header, whilst Georgia’s Saba Lobjanidze squandered a golden chance in the dying seconds, firing over the bar when clean through on goal.
The draw leaves Group F finely poised, with both teams now looking anxiously towards the Portugal-Turkey match. A draw in that fixture would mean the Czech Republic and Georgia would need victories in their final group games to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
