Gravenberch Shines As Liverpool Overcome Spirited Union SG

October 05, (THEWILL) – Liverpool made it two wins from two in their UEFA Europa League group campaign, defeating Belgian outfit, Union Saint-Gilloise, 2-0 at Anfield on Thursday evening. It was far from a vintage performance from the Reds, but summer signing, Ryan Gravenberch, impressed throughout, scoring his first goal for the club since his £34.5m move from Bayern Munich.

The Dutch midfielder opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, pouncing on the rebound after Union goalkeeper, Anthony Moris, could only parry Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shot. Liverpool had dominated the first half but lacked a cutting edge, with Darwin Nunez missing a couple of presentable chances.

After the break, Liverpool looked to kill off the match but were frustrated by the heroics of Moris. He produced fine stops to deny Diogo Jota and Gravenberch, keeping Union’s hopes alive. The Belgian side grew in confidence and had strong appeals for a penalty waved away when substitute Kevin Rodriguez was felled in the box.

Despite coming under late pressure, Liverpool secured the three points when Jota doubled their advantage in the closing stages. A tackle on substitute Luis Diaz saw the ball break kindly for Jota, and he slotted home calmly to wrap up the win.

It was a spirited effort from Union, but Liverpool’s superior quality shone through. Gravenberch looks an exciting talent, while Jota’s goal provided welcome breathing space late on for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
