September 08, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s athletes made their mark at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, finishing 40th overall on the medals table and 4th in Africa. The team’s total haul of seven medals, including two gold, three silver and two bronze, demonstrated the country’s strength in para-sports, particularly in powerlifting.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo led the charge with a remarkable performance in the women’s over 86 kg para-powerlifting event. She clinched gold and set a new world record by lifting 167 kg, surpassing her own previous record of 166kg set moments earlier. This achievement not only earned her place as the world’s best in her category but also marked a significant milestone for Team Nigeria.

Onyinyechi Mark added to the gold medal count with her stellar showing in the women’s 61 kg powerlifting event. She broke her own World Record by lifting 150 kg, exceeding her previous record of 146 kg. Mark’s feat included breaking the Paralympic record twice in the same event, displaying her exceptional skill and determination.

Other standout performers included Latifat Tijani, who earned silver in the women’s 45 kg powerlifting category. The remaining medals came from powerlifters, reaffirming Nigeria’s dominance in this discipline on the global stage. There was also the historic Mariam Eniola Bolaji’s bronze medal in the Women’s Singles SL3 badminton event.

These Paralympians have once again proved that with proper support and resources, Nigerian athletes can excel internationally. To build on this success, the government must prioritise better training facilities, financial backing and opportunities for future athletes.

With increased investment in their development, Nigeria can aim for an even stronger showing at the next Paralympic Games, further establishing the country as a formidable force in adaptive sports.
