February 13, (THEWILL) – Chris Hughton has been appointed as the new head coach of the Ghanaian National Team, replacing Otto Addo.

The former Ireland international had been serving as the technical advisor to the national team and was part of Addo’s coaching staff at last year’s Qatar World Cup. Following a disappointing campaign, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to appoint Hughton as the head coach to lead the team forward.

Hughton will have a talented squad at his disposal, including young stars such as Abdul Fatawu, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Mohammed Kudus. The GFA believes that the appointment of Hughton aligns with their vision of building a strong national team for future competitions. This will be Hughton’s first full-time coaching position outside of England and his first managerial role since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2021.

Born in England, with a Ghanaian father and Irish mother, Hughton brings a wealth of experience to the job, having represented the Republic of Ireland 53 times as a player and coaching at various levels, including two spells as caretaker manager at Tottenham.

The 64-year-old will take over the team during the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifying rounds, with the Black Stars currently sitting at the top of their group. The tournament is set to take place next year in Egypt and the GFA is confident that Hughton has what it takes to lead the team to success.
