March 26, (THEWILL) – In Saturday’s encounter between Liverpool and Barcelona legends, Steven Gerrard won and scored a questionable penalty even though they still lost.
Gerrard, who is currently the manager of Aston Villa, has frequently returned for these legends’ games in favour of charity, with Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Barcelona was no different as it was to raise funds for the club’s official LFC Foundation.
For the Reds, Gerrard was joined by Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger, and Dirk Kuyt, while Luis Garcia, who joined Liverpool from Barcelona in 2004, played one half for both sides.
On his return to Anfield in a playing capacity, the former Reds captain was in his elements. He invited and made the most of a contact with 2006 Champions League champion Edmilson to earn a first-half spot-kick.
After outpacing former Chelsea full-back Juliano Belletti on the counter, Gerrard sauntering into the Barcelona box, attempting to slip past former Brazil international Edmilson, only to collide with his thigh and tumble to the ground in a clear attempt to gain a penalty.
Referee Peter Bankes pointed to the spot, much to the amusement of Edmilson and Barcelona. Gerrard stepped up to score from 18 yards, beating the helpless Jesus Angoy and giving Liverpool the lead.
Before the break, Giovanni equalised for Barça, and when play resumed after the interval, Rivaldo picked out the top corner from 12-yards to seal a 2-1 victory for the Blaugrana Legends.
