Germany Leave It Late To See Off Greece Ahead Of Euros

June 8, (THEWILL)- Hosts Germany scraped a 2-1 victory over Greece in their final warm-up match ahead of UEFA Euro 2024. Despite falling behind, second-half goals from Kai Havertz and Pascal Groß nicked the win for Julian Nagelsmann’s side in Mönchengladbach.

Greece took a surprise lead midway through the first half when Giorgos Masouras pounced on a Manuel Neuer spill to slot home from close range. The goal capped an impressive first 45 minutes for the visitors, who missed out on Euro 2024 qualification.

However, Germany improved after the break and Arsenal striker Havertz levelled almost immediately after the restart. The hosts then pushed for a winner and substitute Groß provided it with a sweet volley from the edge of the box late on.

Despite the victory, concerns remain over Germany’s form heading into Euro 2024 on home soil. Nagelsmann’s men laboured for long periods against Greece and have looked unconvincing in recent warm-up matches against Ukraine and Belarus.

The Germans kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland in Munich next Friday. They will hope for a marked improvement when the real action begins.
