December 16, (THEWILL) – Juventus missed an opportunity to move to the summit of the Serie A standings last night following a 1-1 draw with Genoa. The result leaves Juve trailing league leaders Inter Milan ahead of the rest of this weekend’s fixtures.
Despite heading into the match on an eight-game unbeaten run, the visitors struggled to break down a resilient Genoa defence. Federico Chiesa gave Juventus a 28th-minute lead from the penalty spot. However, the hosts equalised through Albert Gudmundsson just three minutes after the restart.
Bianconeri boss Massimiliano Allegri had to contend with an injury-hit squad at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. First-choice stars Adrien Rabiot, Mattia De Sciglio and Moise Kean, were all ruled out. Suspensions also saw Nicolo Fagioli miss the trip.
Genoa’s attacking options were also depleted, with Kevin Strootman and Mateo Retegui unavailable for manager Alberto Gilardino. Yet, a changed starting XI still managed to frustrate the Turin giants.
The share of the spoils leaves Juventus second in the standings, a point adrift of League leaders Inter. The Nerazzurri can now open up a five-point lead when they host fifth-placed Lazio on Sunday night.
