September 19, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won their UEFA Champions League opener 1-0 against Girona at the Parc des Princes. The match remained goalless until the 90th minute when a low cross from Nuno Mendes slipped under Girona goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga’s body, giving PSG a late victory.

The first half saw PSG dominate possession but fail to convert their chances. Warren Zaire-Emery and Marco Asensio came close to scoring, but their efforts went wide. Girona managed to limit PSG to long-range shots, resulting in no shots on target from either team before halftime.

The second half brought more action, with Girona’s Cristhian Stuani forcing a save from PSG debutant goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. PSG’s Ousmane Dembele had two attempts saved by Gazzaniga. Randal Kolo Muani missed a close-range opportunity in the final 10 minutes.

This victory helped PSG avoid going three consecutive UCL matches without scoring for the first time. For Girona, it marked only their second away loss in seven matches and a disappointing end to their European debut.

The match statistics show PSG’s dominance with 69% possession and 21 shots compared to Girona’s five. However, the narrow scoreline reflects Girona’s strong defensive performance throughout most of the game.
