July 08, (THEWILL) – On Monday, Taylor Fritz pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Alexander Zverev in five sets at Wimbledon. The American 13th seed won 4-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3) 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
Zverev looked in control early on, winning the first two sets and extending his run of unbroken service games to 56. However, Fritz broke through in the third set and fought back to level the match in a fourth-set tiebreak.
The final set saw Fritz produce some amazing diving winners as he broke Zverev’s serve to take a 3-1 lead. He held his nerve to close out the match, dropping his racket in joy after hitting a backhand winner on match point.
“It was amazing to do that on Centre Court when you are two sets down in front of this crowd. It’s a dream,” Fritz told fans afterwards. This marks the first time Fritz has beaten a top-five player at a Grand Slam event.
Fritz will face Italian, Lorenzo Musetti, in the quarter-finals. His win means multiple American men have reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time since 2000, with Tommy Paul also making the last eight.
