April 14, (THEWILL) – American tennis player, Taylor Fritz, secured a spot in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals for the first time after defeating defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

The world number two, Tsitsipas, entered the match on a 12-match winning streak in Monte Carlo, but Fritz proved too much to handle, winning 6-2 6-4 in just over an hour. Fritz’s victory was his first career top-10 win on clay court and he credited his success to his ability to play well on the big points.

He broke Tsitsipas twice in the opening set, winning it in just under 30 minutes. Tsitsipas fought back in the second set, but Fritz held his nerve and won the match with a love hold and an ace. Fritz will now take on Rublev in the semifinals, a player he last faced nine years ago on the juniors tour.
