July 24, (THEWILL) – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has conditionally awarded the 2030 Winter Olympics to the French Alps.
The decision was announced on Wednesday, but it comes with the stipulation that France must provide financial commitments for hosting the event.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed IOC members in Paris, pledging to request that France’s next prime minister offer a financial “guarantee” for the Games. Macron also promised to seek the creation of an Olympic law as a priority for the incoming government.
The funding question has been a key issue due to France’s current political situation. Following inconclusive snap elections, there is no government in place, leaving financial commitments uncertain. However, Macron’s assurances to the IOC aim to address these concerns.
France stands as the sole candidate to host the 2030 Winter Games. Macron emphasised France’s commitment to the future of the Winter Olympics, stating: “We want to show the rest of the world that the Winter Games are not just history but part of our future.”
This announcement comes just two days before the opening ceremony of the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024.
