June 10, (THEWILL)- France’s preparations for the Euro 2024 tournament were tempered after they failed to break down a resilient Canada side in a goalless warm-up friendly in Bordeaux.
Les Bleus dominated possession and had the better chances, but were unable to find a way through the determined Canadian defence. Olivier Giroud cut a frustrated figure up front, squandering a couple of half-chances, while Kylian Mbappe was introduced late on but even he could not provide the spark France needed.
For Canada, it was an encouraging performance ahead of their maiden Copa America campaign. Jonathan David went close with a strike that was blocked by William Saliba, while Tajon Buchanan did well to deny Mbappe a late-headed opportunity.
Though France will be disappointed not to have finished with a morale-boosting win, Didier Deschamps’ side remain unbeaten in 14 games since losing the 2022 World Cup final, with only Germany getting the better of them in that stretch. Canada, meanwhile, can take heart from holding the World Cup runners-up ahead of their historic Copa America debut against Argentina.
