France Clinch First Olympic Rugby Sevens Gold

July 27, (THEWILL) – France won their first Olympic gold medal in men’s rugby sevens, defeating two-time defending champions Fiji 28-7 at the Stade de France on Saturday.

The victory marked France’s first gold of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Fiji took an early lead through Joseva Talacolo, but France equalised before halftime with Rayan Rebbadj’s try.

Star scrum-half Antoine Dupont, who came off the bench, played a crucial role in the second half. He set up Aaron Grandidier Nkanang’s try and scored two of his own to take the win.

The 67,000-strong home crowd erupted in celebration as France controlled the final minutes of the match. Dupont’s last-minute try sealed the historic victory for the host nation.
