April 20, (THEWILL)- Spanish tennis star, Garbine Muguruza officially announced her retirement from professional tennis at a press conference in Madrid on Saturday.
The former world number one and Grand Slam champion revealed that her extended break from the sport, initiated a year ago, would now become a permanent decision.
The illustrious career of the 30-year-old saw her capture the French Open title in 2016 and the prestigious Wimbledon crown in 2017. Additionally, she reached the final of the Australian Open in 2020, cementing her status as a force on the global tennis stage.
In April 2023, Muguruza disclosed her intention to take a hiatus from competition, citing a desire to spend more quality time with her family. However, during Saturday’s press conference, she revealed that her priorities had shifted, and she no longer harboured the same passion for the rigorous demands of professional tennis.
The Venezuelan-born tennis star, who achieved the world number one ranking in 2017 and ended 2021 ranked third, claimed three WTA titles that year. Muguruza acknowledged that the discipline and challenges of her previous life on the tour no longer held the same allure, prompting her to embrace a new chapter beyond the realm of tennis.
