July 02, (THEWILL) – Aston Martin has announced a major leadership change in a significant move in the world of Formula One. Andy Cowell, the former head of Mercedes’ F1 engine division, is set to take the helm as Group Chief Executive of the Silverstone-based team.
The 55-year-old Cowell will assume his new role on October 1, reporting directly to Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s co-owner and Executive Chairman. The transition will see current Chief Martin Whitmarsh hand over his responsibilities before the year’s end, marking a new chapter in Aston Martin’s F1 journey.
The appointment brings a wealth of experience to Aston Martin. Cowell’s tenure as Managing Director of Mercedes AMG High-Performance Powertrains coincided with an unprecedented period of success for the German manufacturer. Under his leadership, Mercedes clinched eight consecutive constructors’ championships, setting a new record in the sport.
This strategic move comes at a pivotal time for Aston Martin. The team is preparing to switch from Mercedes engines to Honda power units in 2026, aligning with F1’s introduction of new engine and aerodynamic regulations. Cowell’s expertise in powertrain development is expected to be crucial as Aston Martin navigates this transition and aims to establish itself as a top-tier competitor.
Stroll expressed confidence in the appointment, emphasising the team’s ambition to become world champions. With Cowell’s leadership, combined with Honda’s partnership and support from title sponsor Aramco, Aston Martin is positioning itself as a formidable force in the coming years of F1 competition.
