July 08, (THEWILL) – Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been shot twice in the chest by a lone gun man in Nara during a campaign event in Western Japan on Friday. Reports say he has suffered a heart failure following the shooting.

NHK, Japan’s broadcaster aired footage showing Abe collapsed on the street, with several security guards running toward him. Abe was holding his chest when he collapsed, with his shirt smeared with blood. NHK says Abe was rushed to a hospital, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The shooter, a male, has been taken into custody by the police, the broadcaster said.
