Fofana Joins Union Berlin On Loan For 2023/2024 Season

July 11, (THEWILL) – Union Berlin have completed the signing of Chelsea striker, David Fofana, on a season-long loan for the 2023/2024 campaign.

Fofana, a 20-year-old Ivory Coast international, joined Chelsea in January from Molde on a lengthy contract but has struggled for opportunities at Stamford Bridge. With just four appearances, including a single start, Fofana has opted to join Union Berlin to gain more regular playing time. The German club, who secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga last season, see Fofana as a valuable addition to their squad.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Fofana said: “Union have developed extremely strongly in the last few years and it excites me a lot to be a part of this in the coming season. The club has made a long and hard effort to find me, and now I want to repay that with good performances.”

Union Berlin’s Managing Director of men’s professional football, Oliver Ruhnert, highlighted Fofana’s speed and offensive versatility as qualities that attracted the club to the player: “We want another goal scoring player, who will give our attacking game additional impetus.”

Fofana’s loan move to Union Berlin adds him to the list of players departing Chelsea this summer, as manager Mauricio Pochettino reshapes the squad for the upcoming season. Alongside Fofana, notable players such as Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, N’Golo Kante, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have also made moves to new clubs, signalling a significant overhaul in Chelsea’s roster.
