September 20, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has not only expressed sympathy, but also provided tangible support to its members affected by the recent devastating floods in Borno State.

The NUJ National President, Chris Izekuzo, was unable to make the trip due to prior commitments, but his message of commiseration was delivered by the Deputy National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, who paid a solidarity visit to the state.

During his visit, Yahaya met with the Borno State Executive Council (SEC) and conveyed the NUJ’s commitment to supporting the relief efforts.

“We are deeply saddened by the devastation caused by these floods, our hearts go out to the victims, especially our colleagues who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. We stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time.”

Yahaya’s visit wasn’t just about words of comfort. He symbolically distributed relief materials, including 25kg bags of rice, provided by the NUJ national secretariat to some affected members. He also announced a cash support of two hundred thousand naira to assist the victims and personally donated one hundred thousand naira.

In addition to the immediate relief, the NUJ pledged its resources and expertise to help in disseminating information and raising awareness about the situation, ensuring that the plight of the flood victims remains in the public eye.

During his address to the emergency SEC meeting at the NUJ press centre, Yahaya commended the NUJ leadership in Borno state for their commitment towards repositioning the union.

The visit by the NUJ leadership underscores the importance of collaboration and support during times of crisis. It also highlights the union’s commitment to its members and their well-being, even in the face of natural disasters. This practical approach shows a tangible demonstration of the union’s dedication to its members beyond mere words of sympathy.
