May 29, (THEWILL)- Barcelona have appointed Hansi Flick as their new manager, replacing the outgoing Xavi Hernandez. The 59-year-old German, who won the treble with Bayern Munich in 2019/2020, has signed a two-year deal with the Catalan giants.
Flick’s appointment marks a significant move for the former Germany national team manager, as it will be his first coaching role outside his home country. Barcelona’s Sporting Director, Deco, met with Flick last week and was impressed by the German’s clear vision for the squad and his approach both on and off the pitch.
The decision to part ways with Xavi came after Barcelona finished the season in second place, 10 points behind champions Real Madrid. Flick’s planning for the summer will commence shortly, alongside Deco, as the club looks to bridge the gap at the top of La Liga.
Flick’s tenure as Germany’s head coach was short-lived, lasting from August 2021 to September 2022. He was sacked after a disappointing run of results, including a group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Julian Nagelsmann replaced Flick and will lead Germany at this summer’s Euro on home soil.
Barcelona’s President, Joan Laporta, had previously expressed admiration for the new wave of German managers, including Flick, during his 2021 presidential campaign. The appointment of Flick represents the fulfilment of that vision.
