July 03, (THEWILL) – Finidi George has been appointed as the new head coach of Nigeria Premier Football League club, Rivers United. The former Super Eagles manager has signed a two-year contract with the Port Harcourt-based team, marking a significant return to his hometown.

George’s appointment comes shortly after his resignation from the Nigerian national team following disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His primary objective at Rivers United will be to book a continental ticket for the club next season, a challenge he has embraced with enthusiasm.

The former Ajax winger expressed his excitement about returning to Port Harcourt, where he began his football career with Sharks FC. George acknowledged the significance of this opportunity, stating: “Rivers United are a very big team and seeing their results last season inspired me to come back here as a Port Harcourt boy and see how I can impact a little bit.”

Rivers United, who were crowned NPFL champions in 2022, finished eighth in the League last season. George’s appointment is seen as a move to revitalise the team’s performance and push for higher achievements in the coming seasons.

The illustrious playing career of the 53-year-old Nigerian football legend, which included successful stints at Ajax and with the Nigerian national team, brings a wealth of experience to Rivers United. His transition from player to coach, and now his return to his roots, marks an intriguing new chapter for the coach and Nigerian football in general.
