August 17, (THEWILL) – FIFA’s latest monthly world rankings for August women’s football show Nigeria’s Super Falcons maintaining their 36th position globally. The team gained five points despite a poor performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics in France. Nigeria continues to lead in Africa, ahead of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, who moved up to 50th place worldwide.
Other African teams in the rankings include Morocco at 59th, Zambia at 62nd (up two spots) and Ghana at 66th (down one spot). These rankings reflect the competitive nature of women’s football in Africa and the ongoing efforts to improve global standings.
The United States, after winning gold at the Paris Olympics, jumped four spots to reclaim the top position in the world rankings. France and world champions Spain follow, with Germany and Sweden completing the top five.
Nigeria’s ability to hold their rank, even after disappointing Olympic results, indicates their overall consistency. The rankings also show global shifts in women’s football, with established powers maintaining positions while emerging nations make progress.
The Super Falcons’ current standing emphasises their status in African women’s football. It also points to potential for Nigeria and other African nations to challenge elite teams in future competitions, as the sport continues to develop globally.
