October 17, (THEWILL) – Formula One has announced significant changes to its sporting regulations for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The International Motoring Federation (FIA) confirmed on Thursday that the bonus point awarded for the fastest lap during a race will be discontinued from next year.

This alteration comes just five years after the reintroduction of the fastest lap bonus point in 2019. The point, which was originally part of F1 in the 1950s, was awarded to drivers who set the quickest lap time and finished within the top 10 positions. With a record-breaking 24-race calendar for 2024, this change could have a substantial impact on the championship standings.

In addition to removing the fastest lap bonus point, the FIA has increased the requirement for teams to run young drivers during free practice sessions. Previously, each car was obligated to feature a young driver once per season. Starting in 2024, this requirement will double to twice per season, providing more opportunities for emerging talent to gain experience in F1 machinery.

The significance of the fastest lap point was demonstrated at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo, driving for RB (formerly known as AlphaTauri), was strategically pitted for fresh tyres to set the fastest lap despite being in 18th position. This move effectively prevented McLaren’s Lando Norris from claiming an additional championship point, highlighting the potential for tactical manoeuvres under the current system.

These regulatory changes, approved by the World Motor Sport Council, aim to refine the sport’s competitive landscape.
