FG Shuts Laboratory Over Inaccurate DNA, Threatens To Sanction Unregistered Labs

November 08, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has shut down a medical laboratory over allegations of inaccurate DNA results.

It also gave all medical laboratories in the country a 2025 deadline to register with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) or be shut down.

The MLSCN Registrar/Chief Executive, Dr. Tosan Irabor, disclosed this in a chat with newsmen on the sidelines of a press conference addressed by the Registrar/Secretary-General of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science, Dr. Godswill Okara.

He however did not disclose the name of the affected laboratory.

Irabor, responding to a question on why many marriages have broken down because of inaccurate DNA results, said, “When such happens, the best thing is to report to the MLSCN with the result issued to you by that laboratory which gave you AA or AS. Nigeria is evolving, the issue of health litigation is just coming up.

“I got a call about a month ago about a laboratory in Nigeria that has this (DNA) problem. They sent it back from Saudi Arabia to confirm. And what did I do? We closed the laboratory. It is not registered with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.

“We don’t know the quality of the personnel that are working in that facility. That laboratory is not recognised in Nigeria. So, people should patronise recognised laboratories.”

DNA is a hereditary complex molecule that contains all of the information necessary to build and maintain an organism. During reproduction, a portion of the DNA is passed to the offspring.

A DNA paternity testing profiles whether a child or an individual is the biological parent of another individual.
