October 16, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will conclude his role as global ambassador following the termination of his multi-million pound contract by the club’s part-owners INEOS. Ferguson, who has been a familiar presence in the Old Trafford director’s box, signed a £2.16 million annual agreement with United in 2013 to serve as a club ambassador.

The decision to end the partnership was reportedly amicable, according to a team source. The 82-year-old Ferguson is said to be stepping back from several time-consuming responsibilities, though he remains welcome at Old Trafford. This move comes amid widespread job cuts at United, part of cost-saving measures implemented by the club, which has been experiencing financial losses.

Ferguson’s illustrious career as United’s manager saw him lead the team to 38 trophies, including 13 English Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League victories, before his retirement from management in 2013. His departure from ambassadorial duties is scheduled for the end of the current season.

The news has sparked controversy within the fan community. Former United forward Eric Cantona expressed his disapproval on social media, calling the decision “scandalous” and stating that Ferguson should be allowed to do “anything he wants at the club until the day he dies.” Similarly, ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand commented on the situation, suggesting that “no one is safe” at the club if even Ferguson can be removed from his position.

United’s recent performance has been underwhelming, with the team currently sitting in 14th place in the League. This follows their worst-ever eighth-place finish last season, despite significant player investments. The club has spent approximately £600 million on new players since the appointment of Dutch manager Erik ten Hag ahead of the 2022/2023 season.
