March 18, (THEWILL) – Turkish football giants Fenerbahce are considering withdrawing from the Super Lig after some of their players were assaulted by Trabzonspor fans following their weekend away victory. The incident occurred when Trabzonspor supporters stormed the pitch and brawled with security personnel and Fenerbahce players in the aftermath of their team’s 3-2 home defeat on Sunday.
The violent scenes have prompted Fenerbahce to call an Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting on April 2. A club statement revealed the agenda includes “an evaluation of the actions to be taken following the incident, including the withdrawal of our football Team A from the Super Lig”. This season’s Super Lig campaign has been marred by several controversial incidents involving improper fan behaviour.
Reacting to the latest events, FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the violence, labelling it “unacceptable” in the Turkish top flight. Fenerbahce currently sit second in the league standings on 79 points from 30 games, just two points adrift of leaders Galatasaray and 30 clear of third-placed Trabzonspor.
The potential exit of one of Turkey’s biggest clubs would deal a major blow to the Super Lig’s credibility and reputation. Fan violence has plagued Turkish football for years despite attempts by authorities to curb such incidents through tighter security measures and sanctions.
