SAN FRANCISCO, November 30, (THEWILL) – The English Football Association is set to investigate Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani about a social media post he made on Sunday.
Cavani shared a fan’s Instagram story that used a racially offensive term, although the post involved has since been deleted.
In the player’s defence, Manchester United stressed the notion that the word was clearly applied in an affectionate manner and carries different connotations in South America, where the Uruguayan international is from.
They further admitted that the 33-year-old had been sensitised that such terms are perceived very differently in the UK and he subsequently deleted the post.
On Sunday night, the FA declined to comment but the understanding is that the football governing body will launch a probe into the online post.
Coming on as a second-half substitute while United trailed 2-0 in the Premier League game against Southampton, Cavani assisted midfield talisman Bruno Fernandes to half the deficit and then scored twice for a dramatic comeback victory at St Mary’s.
The win saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side seal their fourth consecutive away Premier League win. Cavani has now scored three league goals for the club since joining as a free agent in the summer transfer window.
