Ex-Super Eagles’ Coach Rohr Set To Lead Benin To AFCON 2024

February 14, (THEWILL) – The Benin Football Federation is expected to announce that Franco-German coach, Gernot Rohr, will be the new head coach of the national team.

Rohr, a former coach of the Nigerian national team, has been chosen to replace interim coach, Moussa Latoundji, and will be tasked with leading the team to the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which has been postponed to 2024.

Rohr’s appointment comes after a meeting held by the Benin Football Federation on Tuesday, though the announcement has yet to be officially confirmed. The experienced coach, who has an impressive CV and previously played for Girondins de Bordeaux, will be expected to help Benin qualify for the AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Benin is currently at the bottom of their qualifying group with zero points, having been defeated by Mozambique and Senegal in their first two matches. With Rohr at the helm, the team will be hoping to turn their fortunes around and secure a place in the tournament.

African football’s governing body (CAF), through its President Dr Patrice Motsepe, announced in July last year that the 34th edition, which was initially scheduled for June 23 to July 23, 2023, will be played in 2024 due to the weather conditions in the West African country in June and July.
