Ex-Australian Cricketer Symonds Dies In Auto Accident At 46

May 15, (THEWILL) – Andrew Symonds, a former Australian cricketer, was involved in a tragic car accident that took his life.  His family confirmed his passing, and appreciated sympathy and best wishes they were receiving, while asking that their privacy be respected.

The 46-year-old was killed in a single car collision near Townsville on Saturday, May 14 at about 11 pm (2 pm local time), around 50 kilometres from his house. His car reportedly rolled off the road near the Alice River Bridge, according to reports.

Queensland Police issued the following statement: “Early information indicates, shortly after 11pm the car was being driven on Hervey Range Road, near Alice River Bridge when it left the roadway and rolled.

“Emergency services attempted to revive the 46-year-old driver and sole occupant, however, he died of his injuries. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.”

Symonds appeared in 26 Tests for Australia and is best known for his debut at the 2003 World Cup, when he scored a match-winning century against Pakistan. His centuries against England and India will be remembered for a long time as well.

After retirement, Symonds worked as a Fox Sports pundit, further cementing his status as a fan favourite in the years that followed his retirement. Fans admired his expert knowledge but also fell in love with his wit and humour.

Those who worked alongside Symonds have promptly paid tributes. “Horrible news to wake up to,” retired player and now coach Jason Gillespie posted on Twitter. “Utterly devastated. We are all gonna miss you mate.”

“Hearts broken again,” wrote fellow commentator Kerry O’Keeffe. “If we were Ted Lasso, he was our Roy Kent, called it straight, didn’t bluff, was true to himself, loyal, quirky. Will be missed forever.”
