BEVERLY HILLS, June 22, (THEWILL) – A former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), retired Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika has been taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS) over his alleged role in the embezzlement of the estimated $2.1 billion earmarked for purchase of arms to fight the Boko Haram insurgency.
DSS sources said he is also being investigated for allegedly providing funding and support for the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).
The former military chief was arrested at his Maitama, Abuja residence on Tuesday night and transported to the DSS headquarters where he was still being held as at the time of writing this report.
The President Muhammadu Buhari administration is vigourously investigating how millions of dollars set aside to purchase arms for the military to wage a formidable war against the Boko Haram was stolen by officials under the past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
