Napoli 1 – 1 Real Sociedad
SAN FRANCISCO, December 11, (THEWILL) – It was a game of late drama in Naples where Napoli led in the newly named Diego Madonna stadium until the final seconds of the tie.
That was when Sociedad striker Willian José smashed in a crucial equaliser for the visitors. That precious point was sufficient for them to qualify in second place in Group F behind Napoli especially after AZ Alkmaar’s defeat at Rijeka in the other group tie.
Rijeka 2 – 1 AZ Alkmaar
Another dramatic finish with another late Europa League goal in this last group fixture was the highlight of this game at the Stadion HNK in Rijeka.
The result meant the Croatians hosts celebrated their first win in this season’s competition while AZ were left to wonder what might have been, because losing left them third in the group after that last-gasp defeat.
Owen Wijndal had given them hope after cancelling out Luka Menalo’s opener but Ivan Tomecak stole the points at the death and that effectively knocked both sides out.
Group F Standings
Napoli – 11
Real Sociedad – 9
AZ Alkmaar – 8
Rijeka – 4
Napoli and Sociedad go through to the round of 32.
