Eriksen Scores In Return To Denmark Squad In 4-2 Loss To Netherland

March 26, (THEWILL) –Christian Eriksen scored his first goal for Denmark nearly a year after suffering a cardiac arrest in a 4-2 loss to the Netherlands on Saturday.

As THEWILL reported, after Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland last summer, the 30-year-old was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), and Serie A restrictions forced him to leave Inter.

The Dane subsequently signed for English Premier League club Brentford in January after his contract at San Siro was voluntarily ended, and he is quickly proving to be a fan favourite in west London.

Eriksen, who has made no secret of his desire to compete in the 2022 World Cup, was recalled to Kasper Hjullmand’s squad for the March international break.

And the midfielder marked his return to the Danish national team with a powerful strike in a 4-2 friendly loss to the Netherlands on Saturday evening.

He came on at halftime to replace Jesper Lindstrom, and two minutes into the second half, Andreas Skov Olsen found him out on the edge of the penalty area, and he fired into the top corner at the Johan Cruyff Arena, where he had spent four years with Ajax.

The Netherlands led 3-1 at halftime. The hosts took the lead through Steven Bergwijn. Jannik Vestergaard equalised, though Nathan Ake and Memphis Depay scored for the Oranje before the break.

With 20 minutes remaining, Bergwijn grabbed his brace to double the lead once more and there were no further goals before the end of regulation time.
