April 29, (THEWILL) – A landmark move has seen English Premier League clubs vote to introduce a spending cap that will limit transfer fees, wages and agent commissions. The decision aims to create a more even playing field among teams, regardless of their broadcasting revenue.

The spending cap will be linked to the lowest amount of money earned from television rights by any club in the division. Sixteen clubs, including powerhouses like Liverpool and Arsenal, voted in favour of the measures, while Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa opposed the cap. Chelsea abstained from the vote.

Concerns that bigger clubs with UEFA Champions League riches have gained an unfair advantage prompted the idea behind the cap. It is designed to ensure teams earning substantial sums from European competitions remain on a par with the rest of the league. However, the specific details of the cap have not yet been finalised and will be discussed at a meeting in June.

Crucially, the cap will not impact current spending levels and teams will not be required to reduce their existing wage bills. Last season, Man City boasted the league’s highest wage budget of £423 million and the highest agent fees of £51.5 million.

Southampton, on the other hand, earned the least from television rights at £104 million, a figure that could potentially inform the cap’s calculations.
