August 13, (THEWILL) – English Premier League CEO, Richard Masters, has stated that it is time for Manchester City to face the 115 charges of alleged financial regulation breaches brought against them.
The charges, issued in February 2023, cover the period since the club’s acquisition by Abu Dhabi-City Football Group and have been referred to an independent commission for a hearing.
The potential consequences for Manchester City, if found guilty, are severe. They could face a points deduction or even relegation from the top division. However, the club maintains its innocence and is contesting all charges. No verdict has been reached in the case as of August 2024.
According to a report in The Times, the hearing is set to begin in September 2024, with an outcome expected in early 2025. Masters emphasised the need for resolution, stating: “It is time now for the case to resolve itself. It has been going on for a number of years and I think it is self-evident that the case needs to be heard and answered.”
Despite the ongoing investigation, Manchester City’s on-field performance has remained strong. They followed their 2022/2023 treble with a fourth consecutive League title in the 2023/2024 season. The club is set to begin their 2024/2025 campaign with an away match against Chelsea on August 18.
Masters added that once the case has been heard, a decision will be published, addressing all questions surrounding the allegations. This long-awaited resolution will likely have significant implications for both City and the wider landscape of English football.
