September 08, (THEWILL) – Enyimba began the 2024/2025 NPFL season with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Heartland FC in the first Oriental derby of the campaign. Despite Heartland taking the lead through Lawal Suraju in the 54th minute, Enyimba responded swiftly, turning the game around with three goals in quick succession.
Substitute Ifeanyi Ihemekwele equalised for Enyimba in the 65th minute. Just five minutes later, Clinton Jepheta put the visitors ahead with his first goal of the game and then completed his brace in the 73rd minute, sealing the win for the 2022/2023 NPFL champions.
This match marked Enyimba’s dominance over Heartland in recent years, continuing their impressive form in the Oriental derby. Heartland’s early lead was promising, but Enyimba’s resilience proved too strong, with their rapid comeback ensuring a successful start to the season.
Heartland struggled to maintain their advantage after scoring, and Enyimba capitalised on their defensive lapses. The result places Enyimba in a strong position early in the season, as they aim to reclaim their title.
The game was one of three away victories on the opening weekend of the 2024/2025 NPFL season, alongside wins for Remo Stars and Niger Tornadoes.
