October 23, (THEWILL) -Ekiti State, in collaboration with private individuals and corporate organisations, is set to host a major fundraiser for the Olowe of Ise Museum on October 27, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event, which will be hosted by Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, aims to raise the financial resources needed for the construction of the museum, acquisition of artworks, and its operational support.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Olowe of Ise Arts Foundation, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, made the announcement during a press briefing in Lagos. He emphasised that the project was not solely an initiative of the Ekiti State Government but one that involves all Nigerians who share in the vision of preserving the legacy of the legendary Yoruba artist, Olowe of Ise.

“This fundraising event is an opportunity for patrons of the arts, corporate leaders, and the general public to contribute to this landmark project,” Ojudu stated. He further explained that the museum will be built on the grounds of Olowe’s original workshop in Ise Ekiti, providing visitors with an immersive experience and a deeper understanding of his contributions to Yoruba culture and the global art world.

Ojudu highlighted that efforts are ongoing to preserve Olowe’s works and educate future generations about his legacy, which includes bridging traditional and innovative art forms. The museum will also feature educational programs and exhibitions, offering insights into Yoruba art and culture.

Director General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Mr Olugbile Holloway, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to preserving the heritage of Olowe of Ise, noting the importance of maintaining such cultural legacies for future generations. “If we can’t preserve our heritage, then we risk losing it”, Holloway said.

Chief Nike Okundaye, represented by her daughter Ms. Aina Davies, emphasised the importance of investing in cultural heritage, calling for more efforts to document and showcase Nigerian history and art. She expressed concern about the Western focus on preserving African heritage while Nigerians chase after Western ideals, urging a pause to reflect on and preserve indigenous cultures.Ekiti To Host Fundraiser For Olowe Of Ise Museum.

The Olowe of Ise Museum, when completed, is expected to become a cultural hub, featuring galleries and workshops to study and teach the techniques of Yoruba art. It is also anticipated to boost local communities by creating jobs and contributing to the state’s cultural economy.

The fundraiser marks a significant step toward realising the vision of honouring one of Africa’s most influential artists, whose works have inspired generations of artists and scholars around the world. The event will bring together prominent figures, including members of the museum’s Board of Trustees and art enthusiasts, to support the project.Ekiti To Host Fundraiser For Olowe Of Ise Museum.
