August 10, (THEWILL) – Ahmed Elgendy won Egypt’s first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics in the men’s Modern Pentathlon on Saturday, setting a world record with 1,555 points. Japan’s Taishu Sato claimed silver, while Italy’s Giorgio Malan took bronze.
Elgendy, who won silver in Tokyo 2020, performed strongly in the show jumping event with a clear round. This put him in a good position for the fencing bonus round, where he maintained a 13-point lead over Sato.
The Egyptian athlete extended his advantage in the swimming event, finishing 17 points ahead of his closest rival, Switzerland’s Alexandre Dallenbach. Sato dropped to fourth place at this stage.
Elgendy started the final laser run event with a significant lead, which he maintained throughout to clinch the gold medal. His victory marks a significant improvement from his silver medal performance in the previous Olympics.
Britain’s Joe Choong, the reigning Olympic champion, finished ninth overall despite being the fastest in the swimming event. His poor performance in Thursday’s fencing ranking round ultimately affected his final standing.
