September 10, (THEWILL) – Augustine Eguavoen has announced his departure from his role as the interim coach of the Super Eagles. The decision came following Nigeria’s 0-0 draw against Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Kigali.

Eguavoen, who also serves as the Technical Director for the Nigeria Football Federation, was appointed to the interim position after negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through.

His mandate was to lead the team for two AFCON 2025 qualifier matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda. Under his brief tenure, Nigeria secured a 3-0 victory against Benin and drew with Rwanda, earning four out of a possible six points.

Speaking at the airport in an interview, Eguavoen stated: “I have been given a mandate to handle two games. It ends today, which is the two games mandate.” He expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and thanked the NFF leadership and players for their support and discipline.

The coach refrained from discussing Nigeria’s upcoming match against Libya in October, emphasising that his role was limited to the two games he had overseen. However, he offered to provide insights to any future coach, saying: “I want to be closer to the team as it should be and I can give inside story and inside information that we need to be able to overcome Libya.”

Eguavoen concluded his statement on a positive note, praising the spirit and potential of the Nigerian team. “No team is a pushover anymore but with the spirit that these boys have exhibited and from what I have seen, we have a very bright future,” he remarked.

The NFF has not yet announced a permanent replacement for the coaching position.
