April 8, (THEWILL) – The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached Philip Shaibu, the embattled Deputy Governor.

The impeachment followed the adoption on Monday, the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the Assembly to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.

Majority Leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghian, said the report of the seven-man judicial panel of inquiry presented to the House had two findings and one recommendation.

While the report of the panel discharged Comrade Shaibu of the allegation of perjury levelled against him, Aiguobarueghian said the Deputy Governor was found guilty of disclosure of government secrets; thus recommended his impeachment.

According to a head count conducted by House Clerk Yahaya Omogbai, 18 out of 19 members present at plenary voted for the impeachment of the Deputy Governor while one abstained.

House Speaker Blessing Agbebaku immediately directed Omogbai to forward copies of the impeachment to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his assent.

In a swift reaction to his impeachment, Shaibu faulted the move, which he said was a threat to the country’s democracy.

In a video post, the impeached deputy governor accused the lawmakers of failing the state and those who elected them.
