January 05, (THEWILL) – The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State, on Friday, said it is conducting a delegate election that will pave way for the election of the candidate to fill the vacant position in the Senate.

It would be recalled that the vacant position in the Senate was a result of the appointment of Senator David Umahi as Minister of Works.

Briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, the State Chairman of APC, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, stated that the party was conducting a fresh election that would guarantee the emergence of an APC Senator for Ebonyi South zone.

Emegha, who stated that the delegate election was an internal affair of the party, noted that proper security architecture, comprising the Police, DSS and other law enforcement agencies, has been put in place to ensure a hitch-free poll.

“It’s a fresh election. The Screening/Congress Committee and the Appeal Committee are already in Ebonyi to handle issues revolving around the Congress election.

“Recall that there was a declaration of vacancy of Ebonyi South seat in the Senate because of the resignation of Sen. David Umahi from the Senate, who was appointed as a Minister. Today is Congress and tomorrow is the primary elections.

“The police and DSS are on ground to ensure smooth conduct of the election. Remember, it’s an internal affair. We have always used dialogue to come up with our stand as a party.

“We are confident that the security agencies will do their job. We have agreed as a party but we cannot deny anyone the right to contest elections. The SWC agreed that the next Senator of APC should come from Onicha LGA. it was in the interest of balance of power.

“The elected five delegates will in turn elect the candidate of the party for Ebonyi South zone. The five delegates will emerge from the electoral Wards across the five LGAs involved as a three-man Committee will handle the election.”

Also, the Chairman of the 7-man Screening and Special Congress Committee, Mr. Smart Iheazor, explained that two members of the party in the State purchased the form for the election and that only one of them returned it to the party.

According to him, “We have commenced action immediately. We screened the candidates that have purchased the form for the election. Two persons purchased the form but only one returned the completed form while the second person didn’t return the form.”
