February 27, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich has announced the appointment of Max Eberl as the club’s new Managing Director of Sport.

Eberl has signed a contract until June 2027 in a move described by the club as the “first step in replacing” Thomas Tuchel, who will leave his role as manager this summer by mutual consent.

Eberl brings decades of experience in football management to Bayern, having previously held roles such as sporting director at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bayern said in a statement that they are “convinced he will successfully shape and mould the future of the club”. Eberl started his playing career at Bayern Munich and turned professional there.

The 50-year-old will take on his new post from March 1, working alongside current Bayern Sporting Director, Christoph Freund. Freund arrived at Bayern from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2023. Eberl said he views the role as a “big challenge” that he will take on “with a lot of respect and humility”.

It is believed Bayern paid a fee to RB Leipzig, Eberl’s former club, in order to release him from his contract. He had joined Leipzig in September 2022 but stepped down less than a year later. Reports at the time suggested his sights were already set on a move to the Bundesliga champions.

Officially, Eberl replaces Hasan Salihamidzic, who departed Bayern after a decade at the club at the end of last season. Eberl has long been admired for his scouting and talent identification abilities, having previously unearthed the likes of Marco Reus and Marcus Thuram. Bayern will hope Eberl can reinvigorate the club’s trophy hunt as they currently sit eight points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen with 11 matches left.
