January 16, (THEWILL) – English shot-stopper Mary Earps has won The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award for the second consecutive year. The Manchester United and England number one beat fellow nominees Mackenzie Arnold and Catalina Coll to retain the accolade she first picked up in 2023.

The 30-year-old’s award caps off an incredible 2023, which saw Earps also claim the BBC Sports Personality of the Year prize. Her heroic performances on the international stage, including saving a penalty in the Women’s World Cup final to deny Spain’s Jenni Hermoso, proved pivotal as England reached the final before eventually being edged out 1-0 by La Roja.

Speaking after receiving her award at the ceremony, Earps said: “Thank you very much. Last year, when I won this award, I didn’t get into team of the year, so I thought I would be done for the night. I want to thank all my coaches at England and United for their support. I am just blown away.”

Earps has silenced any critics since establishing herself as England’s first-choice goalkeeper. Her journey to the top has not been easy, but the shot-stopper stressed the importance of perseverance for any young players struggling to make their breakthrough. “If you’re struggling and going through hell, keep going. It’s never too late to be exactly who you are,” Earps added.

The 30-year-old will now turn her attention back to club duties with Manchester United Women as they continue their push for the Women’s Super League title.
