August 29, (THEWILL) – Simone Inzaghi’s Inter side eased to victory against newly-promoted Cagliari in a one-sided Serie A contest at Unipol Domus on Monday, cruising to a 2-0 win.
Two unanswered goals inside the opening half hour from Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez inspired the Nerazzurri to a fourth consecutive league win in Sardinia.
Back in Serie A after a season in the second tier, Cagliari had made a decent start to the new campaign with a goalless draw against Torino. However, facing the reigning Coppa Italia winners was always going to be a sterner test. Inter headed into the game on a high after beating Monza 2-0 on the opening weekend.
The visitors took the lead on 21 minutes when Dumfries breezed past his marker to finish a delightful through ball from Marcus Thuram. Martinez then doubled Inter’s advantage in the half-hour, showing great composure to beat Boris Radunovic after being teed up by Federico Dimarco.
It could have been more for Inzaghi’s side in the first half, with Martinez hitting the woodwork early on. Cagliari managed to stem the tide after the break as Inter adopted a more conservative approach. But despite improved resistance, the hosts were unable to peg back their two-goal deficit.
The win sees Inter make the perfect start to the new Serie A season with back-to-back victories for the first time in their history. For Cagliari, it was a harsh reality check on their return to the top flight after a year away. They will look to improve against Bologna on Saturday, while Inter take on Fiorentina on Sunday.
